Connect’s Battle of the Bands competition last week saw 6 top young groups battle it out at The Churchill Theatre’s Underground Bar. The sold out event, organised by Connect and The Churchill Theatre donated all ticket proceeds to the Teenage Cancer Trust raising over £400.
The bands: Brainfreeze, Little Sid, Exit Stage Left, Oxymorons, Madura and Makeshift. Each band performed a cover version to a 200 strong audience. Judges including record and festival promoters marked them on musicianship, coherency, crowd interaction, showmanship and image.
Exit Stage Left were crowned Connect’s Best Band for their cover of ‘Mr. Brightside’ by The Killers and proved a popular choice. As winners they performed some of their own tracks with a four song set to end the evening and also won a day’s professional studio time and a band photoshoot.
Vince German, Marketing Executive, said “This was a great night, not just for the bands involved but for Bromley’s young people. Ticket sales have suggested a huge interest in events of this kind and Connect are keen to put on more events in the future.”
James Nall from Exit Stage Left said “It was a great night. Thanks to Connect and the Churchill Theatre for the opportunity and support. We hope that there’ll be more events like this in the future.”
Julia Potts, Education Manager for the Churchill Theatre, said “We’re delighted to see over 200 young people at the Churchill Theatre. Its important that as a central part of the community we work together with Connect to engage with this audience providing exciting creative opportunities”.
All the bands had recorded and sent in cover versions and they were posted on the Connect website at www.getoutmore.org.uk for visitors to listen to. Visitors also had the opportunity to vote for their favourite entry and the online champions were announced with the Oxymorons picking up the prize of a day’s studio time for their cover of ‘Hysteria’ by Muse.
